Square and staggered nail grids: comparing geometry

В мені · VMENI · Updated · 2 min read

Square and triangular nail grids differ in density and nearest neighbours. With the same nearest-neighbour spacing, a large regular triangular grid has approximately 15.5% more points. “Hexagon” and “flower of life” often refer to that arrangement, but their names do not establish special health benefits.

See the layout

In a square grid the rows line up and each interior point has four nearest neighbours. In a triangular grid adjacent rows are offset and each point has six. This is separate from the outside shape: an oval base can still carry a square grid.

Understand the calculation

At spacing a, the area per point is a² for a square grid and about 0.866a² for a triangular grid. The density ratio is therefore about 1.155. This calculation ignores edges; it does not mean a practice becomes 15.5% more comfortable or safer.

Compare actual boards

Check nearest-centre spacing, layout and working area together. A larger board can have more nails without being denser. Tip profile, projection and movement also affect contact. A top-down scaled photograph helps; a symbolic pattern name cannot correct a damaged or uneven nail.
