Touch during a session: consent and changing your mind

В мені · VMENI · Updated · 2 min read

Agreeing to participate does not mean agreeing to every touch. Hands-on support, hugs and other actions need separate agreement. You may limit touch, ask for an explanation or change your mind during the meeting.

Name the support you want

Discuss who will be nearby and which actions are proposed before starting. You can say: “Explain before touching me”, or “No hugs; let us agree hand support separately.” You do not need a personal story to decline.

Consent remains current

A person can agree at the start and decide differently later. Silence, tears or stillness should not be treated as permission for a new action. A simple question is more appropriate than guessing what someone wants.

After an uncomfortable incident

You may name the specific action you did not agree to and ask that it not happen again. If boundaries are ignored, finishing and not continuing contact are valid choices. “This is how the method works” does not cancel the agreement.

Consent for one action

Agreeing to hand support does not authorise touching the back or face or hugging afterwards. Explain a new action and ask separately: “May I now…?” This makes support specific instead of making someone guess what a general offer means.

Changing the agreement

You can say “no touch now” or “I am finishing” without proving the earlier consent wrong. Agree another acceptable support arrangement or finish. A facilitator’s experience does not give automatic authority to choose the interaction for the participant.

Must I explain a refusal?

No. Name the current boundary and find out whether the format can accommodate it. Context is optional, not a fee for declining. If an action is essential to the offered format, explain it before starting and discuss an alternative or not beginning.
